Identify common Arkansas pests, understand why they enter homes, and explore practical prevention and treatment advice.
- American Cockroach
A large roach in an Arkansas bathroom or garage may be an American cockroach, not a German cockroach infestation. These larger insects often come from damp outdoor or utility spaces, although suitable indoor areas can also support them.
- Black Widow
Black widows favor sheltered outdoor corners more than busy living spaces. Around Arkansas homes, a web near stored equipment, a crawlspace opening, or a quiet garage corner deserves a careful look without reaching into it.
- Brown Recluse
Brown recluse spiders occur in Arkansas, but many harmless spiders are mistaken for them. Identification needs more than a brown body or a violin-like mark. Storage habits, monitoring, and a careful inspection matter more than treating every visible spider as dangerous.
- German Cockroach
Tiny roaches around an Arkansas kitchen are not the same problem as a large outdoor roach wandering through a door. German cockroaches live and reproduce indoors, often close to appliances, food, and water. Correct identification changes the treatment plan.
- House Mouse
Mouse droppings in a pantry or repeated scratching behind cabinets need a source-and-entry investigation, not just a trap beside the last sighting. House mice can live entirely inside an Arkansas home when food and shelter are available.
- Norway Rat
Norway rats are substantial ground-oriented rodents, sometimes called brown or sewer rats. Around Arkansas homes, inspect food sources, clutter, foundations, and sheltered ground routes rather than assuming every rat lives in the attic.
- Opossum (Possum)
The animal Arkansas homeowners call a possum is the Virginia opossum. It may investigate pet food or shelter beneath a porch or crawlspace. A passing visitor is different from an animal repeatedly entering the home.
- Raccoon
Raccoons can turn a damaged roof vent or chimney into a sheltered den. Around Arkansas homes, accessible trash and pet food often bring them close before attic noises reveal an entry problem.
- Roof Rat (Attic Rat)
“Attic rat” often means a roof rat, a slender climbing rodent that can nest above the ceiling. Arkansas attic noises can also come from mice, squirrels, or other wildlife, so identification should come before treatment.
- Squirrel
Scratching near the roofline during daylight can point to squirrels, especially in Arkansas neighborhoods with mature trees. An attic offers shelter, but closing the entrance before checking for young can make the problem worse.
